Music

Music is of paramount importance in the NCPA’s programming throughout the year.

The Centre is a major stage for India’s leading musicians, such as Kishori Amonkar, Zakir Hussain, Shivkumar Sharma, Ajoy Chakrabarty and Hariprasad Chaurasia, who perform here regularly. Meanwhile, the NCPA’s smaller venues provide a platform for new and emerging talent.

Hindustani and Carnatic classical music are a key component of the Centre’s programming, but regional traditions and folk music are also well represented.

Western classical music forms another important programming strand, with the Symphony Orchestra of India (an NCPA initiative) offering two seasons of concerts each year.

There are frequent visits by overseas performers, including iconic figures in their field such as Zubin Mehta and Herbie Hancock, ensuring a varied diet of Western symphonic music, chamber music, jazz and popular genres.

Over the years, NCPA has promoted major strands of Indian music, including Hindustani, Carnatic and folk forms. Today the NCPA continues to feature a wide spectrum of artists across a range of genres.

With its well equipped range of auditoriums, the NCPA has always been an important platform for promoting music. Since 2006, the Centre has also been the home of India’s first fully professional orchestra – the Symphony Orchestra of India.
